A Little Bit Harder

January 9th, 2010 · No Comments · Personal Blog

A set that you know won’t go well. The rain is pouring and the weather report says there is not a chance of stopping. Things should have been setup before dark, but here I am with Jason Cassie and Quinlan in this huge abandon neighborhood. We can’t do anything without a small pool of water( something like 1000 gallons), and we have about 50 gallons. To make matters worse, neither of these guys wants to play some airsoft.

As Fox and I drive back to the location after dinner, we pass by some rednecks who got themselves stuck in the mud. We know this because, as all the crew drive by they yell demands to help them. When Fox keeps driving by, explaining that he must drop the equipment first, before coming back, they threaten to shoot him. I get the vibe, that in their eyes we are just some smart allelic “rich/urban kids” who think they are better than rednecks “country folk”.

Fox in all his kindness goes back to help out these douche bags. It’s hard to say if I would have done the same thing, but I join him, since I am sleeping in the passenger seat.

As soon as Fox gets out of the car to lend a hand, a redneck with a shaved head, wearing a puffy camo jacket charges into Fox’s face. I can only imagine the skinhead is thinking Fox is looking for a fight. It is clear at this point that this guy is not sober. And clearly not just alcohol. Fox calmly explains that he is here to help. After helping these rednecks out of the mud he tells them he wants no money, just to do the same for others when the time comes. Moments later Kelly gets her car stuck and they offer to help for 10$ dollars…… We return to the set where a crew of 15 setup till midnight in the cold rain along with detailed makeup for demon extras. After many hours of suffering and multiple cars stuck in the mud the whole thing is called off on account that the camera can’t be taken out in the rain. WOW producer fail. For the most part I blame anything on set that doesn’t happen, that is suppose to happen, on the producer. Seeing as their job is to make sure the film gets made or canceled when it’s a waste or to risky.

We all head back to our cars and find that Chase Conners car has all the windows smashed, along with his headlights. We think they were looking for money, yet in his passenger seat is his camera bag.
While we are talking, a car pulls up and two guys come out of the car. The car itself stays back. Its our unfriendly coked up redneck “skinhead” and a buddy. I already know it was most likely these guys, and I am peaty sure “skinhead” has a gun. I stay quiet. They immediately start pretending they are, for the first time, seeing the car smashed. Their acting is terrible. Also keeping in mind, in all this darkness they are able to recognize that the car is damaged from 40 feet away. They ask who they think did it.
I know what Chris Valori is going to say, and I look to see their reaction when he blames them. Valori doesn’t have any idea it was these guys and says “it was some guys with a white ford”. At that point “Skinhead” pulls out a gun, points it at Chris and says, “that’s my car, motherfucker, you sayin it was me”.

With Russel Bradford , Chase Conner, myself, Chris Valori, and Alex Nelson we might have been able to jump him. But we wouldn’t all be going home.

I stay back for the moment and hope my camo jacket gets me enough redneck empathy to not get shot/ or at least hide in the bushes when the guns goes off.

The Skinhead starts hitting Chris with the gun and I dive into Foxes car looking for a weapon. Damn, I have all these air soft guns, but I don’t think they will fool these guys. Soon I find a 2 ft wrench in the trailer in the back. I look at Chris, the Skinhead, then grip the wrench in my right hand. Over me came a feeling I have never known. I imagined myself running up and slamming the heavy metal against his temple with every muscle in my body. As he goes down, I am making sure he is dead with each repetitive swing to his lifeless body on the ground. Florida law forces my hand.

Back to reality, if the other guy who has not pulled out a gun, has a gun, I am dead. If the guy doesn’t go down in one hit I’m also dead. Heck If either sees me standing here holding holding this wrench, I don’t have a chance.

Skinhead seems to calm down and it seems they are done harassing us until he yells that he wants everyone’s wallet and phone. my Iphone? fuck that. I throw it under the car. Then thinking they are going to shoot me for hiding my phone and not having any money, I pussy out and run into the bushes. They didn’t even notice. While hiding they rob Chris out of $400 dollars. Fox pulls up in the production truck and they come over and rob him of the $60 he has. It seems now they are done robbing and about to leave, plus I want to see what’s going on and get my phone so I come back to Foxes car while they are still there.

They yell at everyone to get the hell out of the abandon golf course or they will shoot us. Great! lets get the hell out of here. Russel jumps in the car with me and thats when the second guy comes to the drivers side window, points a gun to my head and tells me to give him my money. I have not had a dollar in my wallet since my production weeks before. I pull out my wallet and tell him I wish I had money to give him. He yells “I know you got money somewhere” and pulls back the hammer on the gun, I think he is going to kill me for thinking I was hiding my money. He then says ” I like your jacket, give it to me” I gladly give him the jacket but then feel something in the pocket as I hand it to him. CRAP. what else did I give this guy? I say to him as he walks away “hey I left something in the pocket, can I have it back?” he goes into the pocket and pulls it out. My iphone charger. He looks at it and hands it over.

But then the Skinhead guy comes up to the car, point a gun at my head and tell me to drive off. Finally I can get out of here! I turn the key,……. only to hear to battery die. At this point I can almost laugh, if my life wasn’t threatened. I watch everyone else drive away. They walk back to the car and yell at me again to drive off, I tell them I really would like to, but the batteries dead.

They figure I’m a lost cause and disappear in the bushes. Fox has Russell and I get in the grip truck and I watch the right review mirror while Russell takes the left in case they attack again. We turn the headlights onto his dead car in case the guys comes back and take stuff from his car or smash it. We wait like this in the dark for what seems like forever till the red and blue lights hit us. I have never been happier to see cops.

In the end I realize I did have a $1 dollar bill! Also with 3 Camo jackets I don’t mind losing the one that was way to big for me and I got for free somehow.
